I love colour. Heck, who doesn’t? And as of late, prints of a graphic nature have, like Ray Charles with Georgia, been on my mind. Marry the two and I’m rife with glee. I’d say I’m on trend—Sophia thinks so. Button up, knit, and coloured jeans all fresh from Joe. Joe Fresh, that is.
My mommy and me and our matching ‘fros. Isn’t she lovely? It was ’89. We had just emigrated from Jamaica in mid-March and were for the first time experiencing the full blow of a frigid Canadian winter – obviously – hence the lack of goose down parkas. I love how I’ve seen her acid wash button-up worn present day; and pulled off nicely, I might add.
This post will be concise, saccharine and dedicated to my beautiful mother. Today befalls Mother’s Day; when we all take a moment to truly be grateful for the woman who birthed us, to acknowledge the sacrifices this woman has made for us and the forgiveness she’ll always pour over our shortcomings. To the woman who accurately knows what’s best, who miraculously knows what’s wrong before telling her and who sometimes knows you better than you know yourself.
So here’s to you Mom – I appreciate all that you have done for me and do love you so.
Happy Mother’s Day.
It was a night of sequins, gold lamé, back-less and often gravity-defying gowns, and lots and lots of Prada. Of course, the night was dedicated to the aforementioned Miuccia and Elsa Schiaparelli — Impossible Conversations — the Met is currently housing a look into these designers from two distinct eras and their flaring similarities. The 2012 Met Gala, hosted by American Vogue (I just read an interesting and thought-provoking opinion piece on the highly lauded fashion rag here) and experienced by the fashion elite was opened up to us at home through a red carpet live feed. Thus allowing the masses to oggle and be mind-boggled at some of the fashion choices in a more timely manner.
I’m not here to criticize, what the heck do I know, I’ll leave that to the professionals. I would, however, like to point out a red-carpet trend, if I can even call it that: “peek-a-boo, I see you”. You know what I’m talking about; full-length sheer skirts that left little to the imagination. I gotta say…I kinda like it. A new form of sexy – covered up, but not quite. Givenchy and Dior made for some fine examples. All photos derived from New York Magazine.
Do tell, which Met Gala garb was your favourite?
H&M has yet another interesting collaboration up their bejeweled sleeves this year — Japan Fashion Editor and personal style icon to many, if not most, will bedeck the masses with chunky, jingle-y, jangle-y costume jewellery. I can’t wait. The happiness goes on sale October 2012. There really isn’t that much else to say; just to feel the giddiness riddle through your bones. Just watch the video, you’ll now what I mean.
What do you think of H&M’s latest collab?
I’m sure you’ve all seen her before. I don’t know too much about this woman — but that’s okay, it keeps the mystery alive. I do know she’s a fashion editor for Wonderland magazine and that I really love her style. The way she mixes patterns and prints and her juxtaposition of materials and colours (i.e. ash grey jersey with neon yellow lace, who knew?). But most importantly, her fro is pretty groovy.

Who are some of your style icons?
Fighting the rainy gloom one day at a time. I picked up this canary yellow number at Joe Fresh. $12. I’m going back for the bubblegum pink.
When I was a kid, I used to dream in cartoon. I was always disappointed after I woke up; real life seemed so flat. Live your life like a cartoon. Bright. Full of colour. Like Natalie Joos.
I think I can say with confidence that my favourite colour is blue…well, it is at the moment.
The topic of wedding shoes has come up in the past year, with one best friend who married and one best friend set to marry this September. The old adage goes, “something borrowed and something blue“. My something blue, if the day were to EVER come, would be these slip-on moccasins. The blue, royal and rich in colour. The moccasin just screams comfort. And what I thought was white polka dots, upon further inspection, turns out they are silver studs! Anyway, who says I have to wait for my fictitious wedding day? My birthday’s coming up and these puppies are on sale.
